A large part of our trip to Okinawa was sampling local cuisine (and that wasn’t limited to consuming fruit-covered mounds of ice cream, trust me.) This is 紅いも(beniimo), an island purple sweet potato. You can eat it in grilled halves (as pictured; verdict: delicious) or as a paste with ice cream (verdict: delicious) or as a sweet filling in a little tart dish (verdict: delicious.) Just like any other sweet potato, however, it’s not a hit with everyone and some members of our vacation group did not like it nearly as much as others but at least gave it a try.
