Carl is a stuffed bear made from remnant bin fur fabric and a whole lotta love--but don't let his humble origins fool you: He's a little bear with big dreams.

Sir Edmund Hillary had Tenzing, Lewis had Clark--and Carl has a photographer with just as much wanderlust as he has.

Today, as I approached the doors of the National Portrait Gallery, I stopped, walked back down the stairs, and crossed the street to take this photo. Why? Because even though I have been to these museums over and over again since I was young, this blog isn’t titled “The Various and Sundry Things That Carl Isn’t Going to Pose With Because His Photographer Has Seen Them Eight Billion Times Already.”
The National Portrait Gallery is a beautiful building inside and out and it shares its space with the Smithsonian American Art Museum so it isn’t purely portraits, either. If you only have a day or two in D.C., this probably isn’t one to add to your list unless there’s a particular piece that you love and know they have (like some Andy Warhol prints). Honestly, the last time I was there, it was to see Stephen Colbert’s portrait as displayed in-between the restrooms in the Hall of Presidents, but that all being said: it’s still another wonderful, FREE art museum in our nation’s capital.
